Fresh Tech — June 2021

Fresh Tech

Our monthly series — Fresh Tech — a collection of fun things on the web that sparked our interest with their fresh takes on tech. This month, we enjoy the more leisurely pace of summer with new book suggestions, consider ways to reduce stress by simplifying, have a little fun with short films and drive-in movies, and more. Pour a glass of something cool and read on…

June is for Fresh Ideas

cute couple taking a selfieSummer is often about no school, family vacations, and catching up with friends. We’re all ready for some social time, after a year+ mostly spent at home.

It is also a time when our routines are disrupted such that we have a chance to reflect on our relationship with work. How often do we consider the daily habits that may, or may not, be serving us well?

So in that spirit, this month’s topics touch on ways we can improve our awareness and perhaps make some beneficial changes, in both our professional and personal lives.

Design

Do you often wonder, as we do, why so many products are badly designed? This article gets to the heart of it with some simple strategies for avoiding creating digital or physical products with poor design. These same principles could be applied to our home and personal lives too.

Innovation

Have you seen Monocle film’s digital decency manifesto? It’s well stated and expertly animated in less than 2 ½ minutes.

Have a watch:

From the small screen to the big screen: If you haven’t been to a drive-in movie for a few years, or a few decades, this article will update you on some of the upgrades. New tech, ticketing, and food options have been developed recently, as drive-ins are reviving, in the post-pandemic entertainment sphere.

Work Life

In this insightful Fast Company Magazine article on decision fatigue, the author helps us to focus our energy where it counts with some easy tips and wise words from Thoreau:

In his seminal 1854 book Walden, Henry David Thoreau wrote, “our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, simplify, simplify! I say, let your affairs be as two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand; instead of a million count half a dozen, and keep your accounts on your thumbnail.” Even after over 160 years, Thoreau couldn’t have been more correct.
