Our monthly series — Fresh Tech — a collection of fun things on the web that sparked our interest with their fresh takes on tech.

Monthly theme: reimagine with intention. October has been rather bumpy…take a sip of some warm apple cider and savor these goodies!

Photo by NASA on UnsplashWhile we’re not huge astrology buffs, we felt the effects of Mercury Retrograde over the past several weeks. You too? Luckily, things are looking better in the next planetary phase — “Mercury retrograde is no longer blocking our creative juices from flowing, so now’s the time to get your life back on track.” — more here.

Design

Have you taken note of the latest “scandal” in UX design? “UX Theatre is easy to spot: It’s the application of any sort of design methodology without including a single user in the process, or including users but merely for show.” If your work involves UX, you can help your team with the tips in this article.

We’ve been writing about color as we orient LimeTech more towards design. Mixing colors and creating palettes is such a huge topic! There are still a handful of paint companies that mix colors by hand: This one in the UK and these around the world are color masters.

What’s your take on the mysterious aim of this new website launching a collective called Love From, founded by Marc Newson and former Apple designer Jony Ive? We’re intrigued, as are the folks at Surface Magazine, where we first saw this story.

Remote Work

So many new and evolving ideas about remote and hybrid work design are flying through the airwaves these days: This New Yorker article discusses technology entrepreneur Chris Herd’s unique ideas in detail:

“In Herd’s vision, which he calls a remote-first strategy, relevant teams gather less frequently—he suggests once a month as a good interval—in varying locations….“We have people in Belgium and the U.K., in the U.S. from the East Coast to the West,” he said….He even imagines a future in which specialized resorts will arise in locations conducive to brainstorming or strategy formation…work[ing] with the help of professional on-site facilitators. These semi-frequent off-site gatherings might sound expensive….but, Herd suggested, they’re cheaper than maintaining a permanent space for everyone, and such meetings would support much of what’s lost in a purely virtual strategy.”

After spending over a year working from home, the issues around burnout for remote workers aren’t possible to ignore. Remote work expert Rowena Hennigan offers strategies for avoiding burnout.
