With all the recent talk about Google+ giving Facebook a run for the money, it is interesting to note that Google is now chasing Skype/Microsoft with it’s recent announcement that international users can now make phone calls from Gmail. This option has been available for a while for US users, but such an expansion of services to the international market indicates Google’s ambitions (and inroads) on the VOIP experience.
We’re hoping that the competitive nature of Google’s efforts will encourage an overall improvement of Skype’s VOIP services. Already, Google has introduced lower rates for calling mobile phones in foreign countries. This change may exert further downward pressure on rates across the board.
